Google Calendar for the 28-hour day

XKCD is a rad web-comic.  Today’s makes passing yo-mama jokes while discussing the concept of the "28-hour day."

It’s an interesting idea.  Six 28-hour days make up a week.  6 x 28 = 7 x 24 = 168 hours.  {math corrected} If you sleep 8 hours out of 28, then you’re getting 48 hours of sleep a week, which is equivalent to just under 7 hours of sleep a night on a regular schedule.  (6 hours 51 minutes).  Personally, I’m optimal at about 7 hours 25 minutes a night on a long-term basis, but I can go 6 hours a night for quite a while and stay upright.

To see what this might be like with my schedule, I put XKCD’s schedule into a public Google calendar.  It doesn’t fit with my school schedule next quarter, so I won’t be trying it.  But if you give it a try, let me know how it works.

Or here’s the ical version.

  1. Hey, 6*28 or 7*24 is 168, not 144, which would be 6*24 ;)

Also, your calendar and xkcd say that you should wake up at 2 in the morning on mondays. On http://www.dbeat.com/28/ you'll see that they recommend starting your week on the same time as you would otherwise. So you should consider offseting your schedule a bit.

I did this (and some variants of it) for several years in the 90's and it worked great. I was living in Phoenix AZ, USA where it routinely gets over 110F in the summer, so I'd also roll things to spend more of my outside time at night (when the temperature drops into the 90s).

There are a number of other advantages that you don't touch on; you get to cut out about 15% of your setup / tear-down overhead (e.g. the dragging yourself out of bed process, the booting up and logging in process, etc.). If it works for you (as it did for me) waiting to go to bed until you are really tired means you sleep more soundly and so you wake much more rested.

In short, I loved it and would highly recommend it if your lifestyle supports it.
